Inspector Hoops

Mike was finally done with the storage area, and it was time to call in Inspector Hoops to make sure everything was done to code..

"Hmmm... This end sticks out a bit, but it feels sturdy enough and is within legal limits."

This support post seems to be fastened to the shelf very securely.."

"Let me get under here and get a good look at the underside.."

"Everything seems to be secure and done well above minimum code requirements, but I am still going to be keeping my cat eye on you!"

OK, I know that was pretty corny and lame, but hey, I did say I was out of blogging material!

Basement Project Progress

Mike has asked me to blog about his work in the basement, and since I have no other new material to blog about, and it is only right to give the man his due credit, I have decided to oblige him. He has been putting in a lot of hard work and time trying to get a storage area built. We have decided we just cannot afford to remodel the whole basement at once. So instead we are doing it in teeny, weeny, small sections, over a long, long amount of time, starting with a storage area. for the past few months Mike has been busy floor sealing, wall drylocking, foam installing, stud building, wall insulating, drywalling, priming, shelf building, until finally, over this past weekend, we actually have what you can call a storage room!! One small corner of our basement is almost complete! Great job babe, it looks phenomenal. Now we just need to get all of our crap laying everywhere else in the basement organized and put away in your newly built designated spot so you can start working on the living area! At this rate I foresee possibly a finished basement in one year... What do you think?? Is it possible? When all is said and done I will even reward you with that 24" flat screen TV you have been wanting... That is the size you said, isn't it?? Just kidding! Love you lots, and don't worry, we will figure something out for your "man cave" cravings!

Christmas Contentment

Well I think the looks on their faces say it all!! Just look at those smiles! Santa, once again, got it right! What a great day we have had. All three kids got what their hearts most desired, a train table for Mikey, green DS for Lillian (it HAD to be green!), and Rebecca, Maria's first American Girl doll. All that with a whole bunch of other stuff made for a phenomenal morning! The kids were so good today, I can honestly say that there was NOT ONE bicker, whine, fight, fuss.. It was amazing. NOT ONE!!! They were so content to just enjoy their new toys and play. We have had the most enjoyable, lazy, happy day ever. Naps, playing, reading, candy-eating.. You can't ask for much better! It has been perfect. If only all days were like this.. I am sad to see it come to an end. Merry Christmas everyone, I hope you had as wonderful a day as we did!
Mikey LOVES his Hess vehicles!!

Lillian was ecstatic with these books.. They were two that she really wanted.. I love it!! 5 years old and she already has a book wish list!
Maria loves the Rainbow Fairies series!! I also thought she should give Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle a try... Who can't love her??

A Different Christmas Poem

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.
Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.

The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.
My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear..
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know,
Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.
My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.

Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.
A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"
For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts..

To the window that danced with a warm fire's light
Then he sighed and he said "Its really all right,
I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night."
It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.

No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.
My Gramps died at 'Pearl on a day in December,"
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers.
My dad stood his watch in the jungles of 'Nam',
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.

I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile."
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue... an American flag.
"I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.

I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat..
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..
Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall.."

"So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."
"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,
"Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son."

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.
For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled.
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."

Christmas Eve Crazies!

Can I just say how excited the kids were this Christmas Eve!! Mikey didn't stop running, Maria couldn't stop smiling, and Lillian couldn't stop jiggling!! What a fun-filled day we had. Of course we had to make Santa his cookies, and what excellent cookies they were. The best I have ever tasted! The playroom was prepped for all the new toys the kids were hoping to get.. (I tell the kids that Santa needs room to put new toys so Christmas Eve is the ONE day of the year that all the kids get in there and willingly, even giddily, pick up.. Maria even vacuumed!) After a music/dancing filled dinner comprising of all their favorite snacks in the living room, sibling presents were exchanged and opened. The reindeer food was sprinkled on the front lawn, cookies, carrots, and milk were set out, the location of Santa was verified and off to bed it was! THREE hours later I think they finally drifted off in sweet slumber. Can you believe that!!! Three hours!!! Mikey and Lillian were so excited they just couldn't settle down... Merry Christmas kids, we love you! Enjoy your day and keep smiling!!!

At long last...

Let me first start off by saying that I LOVE my diamond! When Mike proposed to me 12 years ago, I couldn't have asked for a more perfect ring for me. He did a phenomonal job of picking out my dream diamond. Saying that, I have to also say that I have never been fully happy with the setting that it was in. Well, that's not true, I LOVED my engagement ring setting, I was just not happy with how they incorporated my wedding band. They made it to "fit" around my engagement ring, hence I was never able to just remove my diamond and still have my band on. That has always bothered me. Call me old-fashioned, but I feel that my wedding band is a part of me and should never be removed. So for the past 11 years, I have always harbored a secret desire to get it changed someday...

Well, as fate would have it, a few weeks ago my diamond fell out.. After a few panic-stricken moments, I miraculously found it, lying under the Christmas tree just as though it was an early Christmas present waiting to be discovered. (Mike is convinced that I secretly banged my ring against the counter to make it "accidently" break, I swear honey, that is not the case!!) Well, obviously I can't go around without any rings on, it needed to be fixed!! So.. instead of paying money to reset my beautiful diamond into a setting I wasn't happy with, Mike and I agreed it was the perfect time to "upgrade", as you will. I now have a seperate band that will never leave my finger, and a beautiful setting for my diamond, which just showcases the gorgeous stone. I love it, it is perfect, so thank you honey, for the beautiful diamond, and the beautiful rings. They will be treasured for our long, long lifetime together and beyond.

And the stockings were hung...

...By the mantle with care, in the hopes that St. Nicholas would soon be there. And with all of those great looking stockings I think their wishes may come true!! It has been my heart's desire since the kids were just lil' babes to have homemade stockings made for them. Something special, that was unique to just them, and made with love. Mike and I both grew up with stockings such as these, mine made by my aunt. Mike was tucked in his stocking and brought home from the hospital after his birth. These stockings have been with us all of our lives and are our precious Christmas treasures, with many a Christmas' memory stuffed in them. And I wanted that for my kids as well.

I have had every intention of making these stockings for the children.. I have even gone as far as to buy the yarn and start crocheting one.. I got about 1/3 of the way done.. and stopped. I am not sure why exactly, perhaps because life just got in the way, perhaps because I am not a very good crocheter (and forget about knitter..) Whatever the reason, my dream didn't stop. I still desperately wanted special stockings for the kiddos!

And then in enters my mother. My little "stocking angel". I knew I would never finish the task myself. My mother, knowing me as well as I know myself, graciously offered to provide my children with their unique stockings. She worked day in and day out to finish them for the kids, ensuring that they each would have their very own personal Christmas treasure to enjoy for this year. And what a great job she did! Each stocking was made with love and care. The kids may not appreciate them that much right now (for them, it is just another means to get candy and presents from Santa!) But I am certain that as they get older, and start lives of their own, that their stockings will become the same precious Christmas treasures to them as Mike's and I's are to us. Stuffed with many wonderful Christmas' memories and stories. Thank you Mom. They are beautiful, appreciated, and much, much loved.

2010 New Year's Resolution!!!!

I WILL reinstate my blog into my daily activity. There you have it. No excuses, I just need to make the time and re-evaluate how I look at "The Gross Life". It is not an optional thing, but a necessity that must be done every day just like dishes and laundry.. Only a lot more enjoyable! So please look forward to a jam packed 2010 year!! I am counting on all of you to hold me to my resolution!!

Now on to a few comments about the picture posted.. Our first meager snowfall for the year, the kids couldn't wait to go out and play!! So out I sent them in their jammies and coats.. I love how Mikey is sooo ecstatic over his stick.. Typical boy, he can't even draw his eyes away from his potential weapon of choice for a quick pic! That smile is not a smile for the camera, but a smile of gleeful villiany as he contemplates all the ways he is going to torture his sisters with that stick in the near future!! (and I can tell you for a fact, that he did indeed do just that!)
